Focus CEI – Central European Initiative and Roadshow 5.1.2. Confindustria Of particular institutional significance was the organization of the press conference presenting the BSBF Trieste 2024 event, held on February 1, 2023, at the Region’s offices in Rome. The event was attended by Ministers Adolfo Urso, Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, Anna Maria Bernini, and Undersecretary of State Maria Tripodi on behalf of their respective Ministries—namely, the Ministry of Enterprise and Made in Italy, the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security, and the Ministry of University and Research. Also present were the President of the National Research Council (CNR), Maria Chiara Carrozza, the President of the National Institute of Nuclear Physics (INFN), Antonio Zoccoli, the President of the National Institute for Astrophysics (INAF), Marco Tavani, and the President of Area Science Park, Caterina Petrillo. Similarly, the organization of the International Organizing Committee and Local Organizing Committee meetings hosted at the regional offices in Trieste and Rome was significant. Since 2022, the Central European Initiative (CEI) has been among the institutions endorsing Friuli Venezia Giulia’s bid to host the Big Science Business Forum (BSBF) 2024 in Trieste, confirmed in an official Letter of Endorsement signed by CEI Secretary General, Roberto Antonione. In 2023, the CEI Executive Secretariat (CEI-ES) launched promotional efforts for BSBF 2024 in Central, Eastern, and South-Eastern Europe through two main activities. On the one hand, BSBF 2024 was presented at three CEI National Coordinators Committee (CNC) meetings in Brussels, Istanbul, and Trieste, where BSBF Director Paolo Acunzo (ENEA) introduced the project to CNC members. Meanwhile, following an agreement between the Friuli Venezia Giulia Autonomous Region and the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAECI) , the “BSBF Promotional Roadshow inCEIMember States” was launched to involve companies and stakeholders in BSBF 2024. Participation by operators from Central, Eastern, and South-Eastern Europe in previous BSBF editions (2018 and 2022) had been limited. One of the goals for BSBF 2024 was to boost their attendance, leveraging Trieste’s traditional orientation toward this broad region. Trieste, with its longstanding connections to this area, was chosen as a strategic venue to support the European Big Science Common Market and encourage collaboration between research and industry. A Concept Note was sent to the Italian diplomatic network, particularly to the Italian Embassies in Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Serbia, Slovakia, and Slovenia . The Roadshow engaged companies, SMEs, institutional representatives, business support organizations, Industrial Liaison Officers (ILOs ), and research infrastructures. Each event followed a similar format, featuring opening remarks by the Italian Embassies, the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region , and the CEI , followed by a BSBF 2024 presentation by BSBF 2024 Director, Paolo Acunzo (ENEA) , a roundtable with local stakeholders, and networking sessions. National collaboration with Confindustria included meetings and presentations to raise awareness among regional businesses about opportunities offered by the Forum, strengthening the link between the local industry and Big Science projects. • Presentation BSBF 2024 with Confindustria Alto Adriatico (Trieste, November 21, 2023) • Presentation BSBF 2024 with Confindustria Udine (Udine, January 16, 2024) • Presentation BSBF 2024 with University of Tuscia (Viterbo, January 25, 2024) • Presentation BSBF 2024 with Confindustria (webinar, June 19, 2024) • BIG SCIENCE ITALIA – The Italian industrial system as an international protagonist in Big Science , event with Confindustria, Unione Industriali Torino, Confindustria Piemonte, and Confindustria Friuli Venezia Giulia (Turin, September 5, 2024) At the Unione Industriali di Torino, a BSBF 2024 presentation event was held as part of the approach toward the main event, with contributions frommajor Italian companies and SMEs selected by the world’s most prestigious research laboratories for important scientific projects.
